I Know a Place No Spaceships Go

That last post has me thinking about sci-fi in general. I've been about as productive with "secret things" these days as I've been with this blog, mostly because I can't figure out what sci-fi is supposed to be anymore. The stuff I grew up with--Star Wars, Star Trek--was goofy and heroic and completely unashamed of that. As an adult all the sci-fi I've sought out is antiheroic: Philip K. Dick, overwrought Seventies movies and, lately, the rebooted Battlestar. Certainly, that stuff is much meatier food for thought, but it doesn't do much for the soul. Star Trek is edifying in a way that Philip K. Dick is never going to be. Likewise--to jump genres--Tolkien and George R.R. Martin. I respect the hell out of GRR, but I can't love him like JRR.

Does sci-fi need heroism to stay vital? Or at least optimism? That's the question on the table.
